Reflecting on Science Education: The Evolution of Understanding

July 23, 2023

Over 100 years ago, Einstein's Theory of General Relativity replaced Newton's theory of the universe. As Professor Brian Greene explains and demonstrates in this video, our understanding of gravity (and the universe) changed fundamentally when we accepted Einstein's theories as true over 100 years ago. If we accept Einstein's theory as true, it means that Newton's three laws of motion, and Newton's understanding of gravity as a force, are no longer correct. Yet, Newton's theories are still typically taught as correct and Einstein is often not even mentioned.

In a few sentences, answer the following (your response will be posted anonymously, so please be honest!):

Are you surprised to learn that Newton's laws are no longer considered true? Were you taught that Newton's theories were true? Did you learn any of Einstein's theories? Have you been taught/shown demonstrations like the ones that Brian Greene performs in the video?

My Response:

From my perspective, science is all about learning and growing. Over a hundred years ago, Einstein came up with new ideas that changed how we understand the universe. His ideas replaced what Newton had previously said. Even though Einstein's theories are accepted now, Newton's ideas are still taught in schools.

Now, I'd like to ask you something honestly. Are you surprised to hear that Newton's ideas are no longer seen as completely true? Did your teachers tell you that Newton was right, and did you learn about Einstein's ideas? Have you seen demonstrations like the ones in the video by Professor Brian Greene?

My thoughts are that science is like building a tower. Newton's ideas were like the first level, and then Einstein built on top of that. We keep adding new levels as we learn more.We can prove some things, and others we can't. It's like puzzles; we don't have all the pieces yet, but we're finding them.
